Old School Runescape developers have been arguing about the idea for easy and hard servers. However, it seems that it's just talk and nothing concrete has been announced. Developer Jagex stated that new difficulty servers were "more likely" than the other modes.
Kieren Charles, associate design director, stated that if we are to move forward with [easy-and-hard servers] in the future the difficulty shouldn't be tedious - it should be an actual increased challenge in an interview with NME. It's easier to just make the skill more difficult to master, or make it more expensive, but that's not exciting. This is where the real value lies: make boss fights more important and more challenging.
Charles said that "there's not much concrete yet." These ideas are just that for now. Jagex will continue to explore and develop new RuneScape game modes. Charles stated that "we do want to continue creating these different experiences for Old School-but we don't want to rush them out all." "We don't need to release one every month, that would be too burdensome for players and distract from the core Old School game.
Difficulty is not always easy to implement. You run the risk of having more enemies or being more spongy. The same goes for making it easier and making everything transparent. Charles had better ideas to alter difficulty in the easy mode servers.
"Little frustrations such as your inventory mode having only 28 slots? Charles stated, "Let's expand that. Let's give you more spots or access [to] banks in more places or whatever else could be thought up to make the game feel very different." "I like the idea, it surprised me that it came out as the most popular among all the other ideas in the survey."
Jagex holds polls about every Old School RuneScape Update, asking players to comment on the changes. Jagex won't implement an update if the poll doesn't receive enough votes. Jagex has been playing with new modes lately, so maybe we'll see hard and easy servers in the future.
